The Bunker Spider is a large, spider-like creature found indoors. Bunker Spiders are initially non-aggressive while they build their webs. When finished, the Bunker Spider waits for an employee to approach or step into a web, upon which it attempts to kill them and tie them up in a web.
Bestiary Entry[edit]
Sigurd's danger level: 30%
Scientific name: Mutinum-ficedula
Bunker spiders, of the genus Theraphosa, are the largest arachnid found in the Thistle Nebula and the second largest ever discovered. It's believed they evolved to prey on large mammals over the course of a measly several hundred years after the Boat made its trip around the Thistle Nebula. (Refer to: Speculation on Increased Speciation Around the Fading Nebulae)
Bunker spiders produce silk and lay it around their chosen nesting area, then wait for it to be tripped on. They can be seen waiting on walls, often over doorways where prey could enter unaware. If you find a bunker spider 'unprepared' it may freeze as a defensive reaction. In this case they are best left alone. If a bunker spider reacts aggressively, it is best not to fight with ordinary tools. They use their webs to make up for their rather slow movement, so take note of your surroundings. Their webs can be broken easily with any blunt tool.

Mechanics[edit]
The Bunker Spider does not attack while it is in its 'preparation phase', during which it places webs within its territory. Once finished, it investigates the noises of employees (footsteps/voice chat) within close proximity. It also targets and attacks employees if they pass through one of its webs.
Once a Bunker Spider has laid all its webs, it often climbs onto a wall or ceiling, waiting for someone to trigger the traps. If an employee does not touch the spider or its webs, they can walk by the spider without aggravating it.
If a Bunker Spider kills an employee, it cocoons their body in webs and hangs it from the ceiling. Once a body has been cocooned, it can no longer be picked up, and retrieval is only possible by means of a Teleporter.
Strategy[edit]
Before Bunker Spiders lay their webs, they are best left alone, since they will not be aggressive unless provoked by going close. They will not lay webs when in close proximity to other employees. This also means it is possible for an employee to prevent the Bunker spider from ever laying any webs, albeit doing so poses danger to said employee. Once a Bunker Spider has laid its webs, however, passing through its domain becomes dangerous. Unlike other enemies, spiders will only become aggressive when they detect an employee when touching their webs or standing directly beneath them. In addition, moving far enough away from its webs will cause it to give up and return unless hit with a shovel. Although an unencumbered employee can easily outpace a pursuing Bunker Spider, its webs will slow a careless employee down. If going past it is necessary, be sure to communicate the danger to fellow employees so they can avoid the webs too.
Bunker Spiders can be killed in 5 shovel hits, but deal enough damage to bring an employee to critical from full health. Because the spider inflicts a massive 80 damage per hit, even slightly injured employees should be careful around it as it surpasses the critical injury threshold of 50. With a stun grenade or zap gun, they can become quite easy to dispatch. In addition, their slow speed makes them vulnerable to the same circle-strafe strategy used on the Thumper. Furthermore due to their activation method, they can sometimes be killed point-blank with a Shotgun.
Laid webs may be cleared with shovel hits, which will allow an employee to safely provoke a chase and then reposition for an easier kill. It is also good practice to clean the webs after killing the Bunker Spider sooner rather than later, not just because it impedes employees, but if a second Bunker Spider spawns, it will be triggered by the old webs, causing a possible surprise for an employee on the other side of the building.
Bunker spiders are one of the only enemies that are not able to cross the gaps bridged by metal beams in the Facility map, meaning you can safely camp out on in the middle of walkways.
History[edit]
Version 45[edit]
Added Arachnophobia Mode, which replaces the Bunker Spider model with a floating 3D model of the word 'spider' in red capital letters; the enemy itself is otherwise unchanged.
Made enemy unable to cross gaps bridges by metal beams in the Facility map.
Version 47[edit]
Made enemy slightly faster when almost dead.
Made webs have a slightly large collision radius.
