Butlers are bloated humanoid entities found indoors. Clad in typical butler attire, they are initially seen sweeping the floor with a broom, though they reveal their malicious nature when left alone with an employee.

Bestiary entry[edit]

BUTLER

Sigurd's danger level: 70%

Theres no file on ths one so i'm MAKING it myself. we keep finding these stinky freaks in the mansion, they wont talk to us, they dont even pay attention to us and they look like deflated ballloons. the smell is like rotten meat, it's so bad it puts richard to shame. i hear flies buzzing around inside their bodies. Jess said she saw something crawl out of its eye socket and go back in.

I don't know what to make of this man

they just walk aroun and sweep the floor, I guess thats why the mansion is so clean. At least they do their job. But I swear the stinky freaks stare at me when I'm not looking

update: They chased Rich with a knife. we didnt see it, but he says when he got into the room, the butler just took out its broom and started sweeping like nothing happened. So we're all sticking together from now on. Screw these butlers! Now i have to stay closer to rich and he probably pissed in his suit

Spawn chances[edit]

Mechanics[edit]

The Butler has 4 possible states: Roaming, lingering, murder, and berserk.

Roaming[edit]

While roaming, Butlers wander around and search for employees (typically near the main entrance), occasionally pulling out a broom to sweep the floor. If the Butler has not spotted an employee after 6 seconds of roaming, it begins to move significantly faster.

Lingering[edit]

Upon seeing an employee, the Butler sets the employee as its target, and a 12 second timer will begin. During this time, the Butler stays near the employee. When the Butler is in this state, multiple things can occur:

  • If the Butler is alone with the targeted employee and the 12 second timer runs out: It will enter the murder state.
  • If the Butler loses track of the targeted employee during the 12 seconds: It will check the last place it saw them.
  • If the Butler loses track of the targeted employee when the 12 second timer runs out: It will return to roaming until the target employee has been spotted again, in which case the Butler will immediately enter the murder state.
  • If the Butler loses track of an employee: It will remember the employees location for 6 seconds, regardless if they're the target.
  • If the Butler sees a different employee than the one it is currently targeting and they are alone: The new employee will become the Butler's target and a new 12 second timer will begin.
  • If there is more than 1 employee near a Butler: It will roam and wait until an employee is alone, and the closest employee will be the Butlers target.
  • If employees leave a single targeted employee behind with a Butler: It will remember the other employees location for 6 seconds, then once those 6 seconds are up the 12 second timer for the targeted employee will begin, totaling in 18 seconds.

Murder[edit]

A Butler charging an employee with a kitchen knife.

If a targeted employee is left alone with a Butler for 12 seconds, it briefly looks around for witnesses before charging at them with a kitchen knife, relentlessly attacking until the employee is killed. If another employee enters the room, the Butler immediately puts the knife away before resuming roaming and sweeping the floor with a broom.

If the Butler loses track of a targeted employee for 12 seconds during this state, it returns to its roaming phase. However, it will immediately attack the employee the next time they are seen, unless the Butler is targeting a different employee.

Upon killing an employee, the Butler runs away from the corpse for 15 seconds, then returns to roaming. If the Butler sees an employee during these 15 seconds, it will enter the lingering state.

A Butler immediately attacks if it is caught with the corpse of an employee it just killed.

While a Butler is in this state, an intense eerie melody will start playing.

Berserk[edit]

Upon being hit by an employee, the Butler immediately begins attacking the closest employee and moves incredibly quickly, regardless of how many employees are present nearby. This state lasts for 8 seconds. If any other Butlers see a Butler in this berserk state, they also enter the berserk state.

After 8 seconds, the Butler will return to the murder state.

Death[edit]

Upon death, a Butler inflates and explodes, dealing high knockback to employees within close range. It also drops its kitchen knife alongside a horde of Mask Hornets. The knockback from a Butler exploding does not deal damage itself, but an employee can be damaged from a resulting fall.

Strategy[edit]

The Butler will not attack if another employee is nearby while keeping distance. Because of this, it is advised to stick together with at least one other employee if a Butler is present. If caught alone, it's ideal to run instead of fight as Butlers have a low attack cool down so they can get multiple hits in a short amount of time.

In singleplayer, Butlers only have 2 health instead of 8, so killing them is a viable option as Mask Hornets can be easier to deal with than the Butlers themselves.

Regardless of the number of employees, it is recommended to wait right before leaving the facility for good before killing any Butlers, as the Masked Hornets are extremely dangerous to deal with because of the close quarters in the facility and their persistent tracking.

It is incredibly dangerous to attack a Butler in front of other Butlers, so waiting until one is alone before attacking it is advisable.

Notes[edit]

  • A Butler will be instantly killed when attacked with a kitchen knife.
  • Butlers can hear employees, but this only causes the Butler to look at the employee it hears.
  • Butlers can see through doors, and doors cannot break their line of sight or cause them to lose track of an employee.
  • Stunning a Butler will have no effect on its state or timer.
