Bestiary Entry[edit]

EARTH LEVIATHAN

Sigurd's danger level: 2% cause they can't hide from the ship cmaeras!!

Scientific name: Hemibdella-gigantis

The reverently named Earth Leviathan, of the family Piscicolidae, is one of the largest invertibrates found around the Thistle Nebula. None have been captured, so not much is known of their biology.

They seem to behave as predators. It's speculated they can burrow as far as 40 meters underground, judging by the incredible excavations they can leave behind. They can detect even the slightest vibrations, and for this reason it's not recommended to stay still if they are nearby; that is a myth. Instead, if you hear them burrowing, retrace your steps.

Mechanics[edit]

Earth Leviathans will spawn during nighttime on moons in which they appear, burrowed in the ground. They will roam around underground looking for a target, erupting after a short delay when a player is above them. An attack from an Earth Leviathan is always fatal and leaves no body to recover or Teleport back. Held items will also be consumed, but dropped items will be unaffected and will remain there.

Earth Leviathans have two possible behavioral states, as described below:

Roaming[edit]

Earth Leviathans will roam the map, seeking players at a speed of 4 units per second. When a player is not in close proximity (10 units) to the ship, and is within 15 units of an Earth Leviathan, it targets the player and switches to attack mode.[1]

Attacking[edit]

Earth Leviathans will keep chasing the targeted employee, and will emerge from the ground under specific conditions.

Chase timer[edit]

During this state, Earth Leviathans maintain an internal chase timer. If the targeted employee meets all the following conditions:[1]

  • Is reachable to the Earth Leviathan,
  • Is outside of the ship,
  • Is within 22 units of the Earth Leviathan,

the timer will keep counting. Otherwise, it resets to 0. Additionally, the timer also resets if the Earth Leviathan changes its behavioral state.[1]

If the chase timer exceeds 6 seconds, or the target employee is more than 19 units away from the Earth Leviathan[unverified], it returns to roaming mode. Otherwise, when all four of the following conditions are met:

  • The chase timer is less than 1.5 seconds,
  • The target employee is within 4 units of the Earth Leviathan,
  • The employee is not within 9 units of ship,
  • Successfully passes a 17% chance,

the Earth Leviathan will emerge from the ground.[1]

Emerging[edit]

When the Earth Leviathan is about to emerge, a particle animation will be played near the emerge position, depicting dusts rising from the ground. After a random interval between 1s to 3s, the Earth Leviathan emerges [2], killing any employee or killable entity in its path during emergence [3].

10 seconds after it returns to the ground[2], the Earth Leviathan will reset its status, switching back to its roaming state.

Strategy[edit]

The presence of an Earth Leviathan can be ascertained by listening for underground groaning sounds, and its attack is telegraphed by a distinct low growl as particles of dirt jump out of the ground. An Earth Leviathan cannot be killed and is present on every moon, so caution should be taken during nighttime when roaming outside. Avoid staying too close to your teammates, as one can kill your whole team at once if it catches you off guard. Keep some distance to minimize casualties, but stay close enough to warn each other if you notice something hostile. If necessary, use a Walkie Talkie, the Signal Translator, and the ship's Radar in order to warn your team of an Earth Leviathan before it gets the chance to strike.

Despite the Earth Leviathan's bestiary entry advising the employee to "retrace your steps", this strategy rarely results in surviving an attack and often places you directly in the middle of its hitbox. Often times, when it begins growling, you are already at risk of being eaten. Instead, it is advised to drop any items you are carrying and run towards any area elevated from the ground. Examples of this include (but are not limited to): The ship, any ladders, large structures, or pipes. Entering the interior of the moon will also work, but the worm may still be at the door that you entered when you exit. If you cannot run towards one of these areas, dropping your items and running straight forwards will also help you survive.

A very easy way to counter the worm is drop all items once you hear the first roar, walk around, then sprint as soon as the clouds of smoke arise.
