Eyeless dogs, colloquially known as just "dogs", are large aggressive pack hunters that roam outdoors. Lacking eyesight, they rely on their exceptional hearing and will kill players they are alerted to.

Bestiary entry[edit]

EYELESS DOG

Scientific name: Leo caecus
A large mammal of the class Saeptivus. They are social, hunting in very large packs. They have also been called "breathing lions" for their recognizable sound and large mouths. They are endurance hunters and attempt to make up for their lack of sight with their sense of hearing. It's a popular myth that they often mistake the sounds of their own kind for prey, entering fights within their own packs.

Their behaviour is unique from other pack animals in their tendency to spread out far to cover distance. When an eyeless dog has found prey, it roars to alert others in the near vicinity, who will also sound the alarm, sometimes resulting in a kind of chain reaction. Eyeless dogs can be dangerous in swarms. However, they are characteristically clumsy, taking guesses at their prey's exact location which are often incorrect.

Mechanics[edit]

Noise loudness meter[edit]

Each sound in the game has its own specified "noise loudness" meter, being increased and decreased depending on the distance from an entity (such as an Eyeless dog).

Formula:

Distance < 18 * Noise Loudness

Note: Noise Loudness is halved if there is no line of sight between the player and an entity.

States[edit]

Eyeless dogs have three possible states: roaming, suspicious, and enraged.

Roaming[edit]

While roaming, Eyeless dogs will wander aimlessly.

Suspicious[edit]

If a sound with a noise loudness of 0.25 or more is heard by Eyeless dogs, it will add one counter to their "suspicion level". They will then investigate the sound, with their suspicion level decreasing by 1 every 4 seconds. Once their suspicion level is less than 1, they will begin to roam again.

Enraged[edit]

If their suspicion level reaches 9 or more, or the noise loudness formula above is true, Eyeless dogs will become enraged, moving and lunging towards the approximate location of the noise once close enough. While not lunging, their suspicion level will decrease by 1 every 3 seconds. Once the suspicion level is less than 9, they will stay still until their suspicion level drops to less than 1 (where they will begin roaming again) or another sound is heard.

Strategy[edit]

Spotting Eyeless dogs from afar, players can maneuver around them without alerting them through noise. Alternatively, crouch walking (which eliminates sound made through moving), remaining silent and out of Eyeless dogs' path to avoid a head-on collision allows players to pass by without detection. However, those carrying noisy scrap (even if unequipped in their inventory) such as Teeth, Old Phones, and Robot Toys will alert nearby Eyeless dogs.

Eyeless dogs are especially challenging for those staying inside the ship. Hearing or seeing them nearby, players are able to warn others that there are Eyeless dogs outside before avoiding making sound altogether. Rushing to close the door can attract Eyeless dogs through the noise made, which may enter the ship once the door reopens. If inside the ship, players can either stay silent in the corner to avoid its path while it walks through, or use the loud horn to draw them to the front. Additionally, Eyeless dogs can be drawn away by purchasing an item from the store, as the jingle of the pod will attract them until it departs.

Hitting Eyeless dogs with a shovel will cause them to instantly charge in the direction that they're facing. Players can take advantage of this by forcing them to charge into a wall, followed by a series of repeated shovel hits to stun lock and eventually kill with 12 hits.

Trivia[edit]

  • Eyeless dogs are able to climb the stairs on Titan.
  • Highly reminiscent in function AND looks to SCP-939's Old model.
