Forest Keepers, colloquially known as "giants" and labeled as "Forest Giants" when scanned, are enormous hostile entities found roaming outdoors. They are deaf, relying entirely on sight to locate and chase after employees.
Bestiary entry[edit]
Sigurd's danger level: 50%
Scientific name: Satyrid-proceritas
Believed to share a common ancestor with rapax-folium, these behemoths are called Forest Keepers for the biomes they often inhabit. Their bodies bare markings on their front and back which mimic eyes--this trait is more helpful in their youth, as they are not agile. Their skin is a unique, dense material which hardens further throughout their lives; the large spikes and bumps across their bodies form as a result of aging.
Mechanics[edit]
Suspicion meter[edit]
Forest Keepers assign a suspicion meter to each employee. This meter will rise any time the employee is within the Keeper's field of view.
Formula:
Clamp(Time.deltaTime / (distanceToPlayer * .21) * visibilityModifier, 0, 1)
Crouching without moving will multiply how quickly the meter rises by 1x. Being uncrouched and moving (whether walking or sprinting) will each add 1 to this multiplier, with a max of 3x.
Additionally, as long as a player is in the Keeper's field of view, the suspicion meter of every player that isn't in its field of view will decrease by 1 every 3 seconds, and can become negative. This makes it less likely for one Keeper to begin chasing a different target.
States[edit]
Forest keepers have three possible states: roaming, chasing, and searching.
Roaming[edit]
While roaming, a Forest Keeper will slowly wander around the map. Occasionally, it will stop and look around.
If it spots an employee in this phase, once their suspicion meter is greater than .35, the Keeper will stop and stare at them for 3 seconds. If line of sight is not broken, but their suspicion meter is still less than 1, it will walk towards them to investigate.
Chasing[edit]
Once an employee’s suspicion meter is greater than 1, the Keeper will begin to chase them until either the employee has died, or has been out sight for 3 seconds. In the latter case, it will transition to its searching phase.
Searching[edit]
The Keeper will run around the immediate vicinity (about 25 units) for 9 seconds. If it fails to locate an employee within this time, it will then transition back to its roaming state.
Strategy[edit]
Staying crouched and avoiding their line of sight using the environment (such as hiding behind trees and rocks) will avoid employees alerting a Forest Keeper of their presence. If you are in a Keeper's line of sight, you will hear a continuous low-pitched horror ambience, as if you just saw a Bracken; use this as your cue to break line of sight. Always conserve stamina while outdoors in case you need to sprint away from an alerted Keeper; you are faster than them when sprinting with up to about 35 pounds.
Though Forest Keepers cannot reach employees inside the ship, they can see through an open door, and standing too close to the exit puts you at risk of being grabbed.
If an employee is grabbed, others can use the zap gun, stun grenade, homemade flashbang, or a flashing radar booster to temporarily stun the Keeper and free the employee. Alternatively, using a teleporter or setting the Keeper on fire can free them.
Currently there are only 4 ways to set a Forest Keeper ablaze:
- The explosion from an easter egg
- The explosion from a jetpack
- Lightning
- Old Birds
Keepers will die shortly after catching fire.
Although it is possible to kill a Keeper with shovels, this is not recommended due to how easily the employee can be grabbed. If you plan on taking this route, having more crew members would assist with killing the Keeper. Taking many stun grenades, a zap gun, or a flashing radar booster can also help to keep it stunned, allowing your crew members to hit it with shovels until it dies.
An Earth Leviathan's emerging is another method to kill a Keeper, so you may want to try to get a Leviathan to attack. However, this strategy is risky, as you have to handle 2 lethal threats at the same time, and may run out of stamina too soon.
Forest Keepers can be held at the side or back of the ship if an employee stands in the middle of the oval shape on the roof of the ship to act as bait. Straying too far to the edge of the oval, or standing on another part of the ship, will result in the Keeper being able to reach you. This method allows the rest of the crew to safely get in and out of the ship, deal with other threats, or kill the Keeper by hitting it through the walls of the ship.
You can outrun the forest keeper, just when you see the hands on your screen (as hes catching up to you) sprint away.
Trivia[edit]
- The myth that Forest Keepers chase laser pointers is false. They are only attracted to employees.
- Baboon Hawks will target and kill Keepers. Eyeless Dogs can also kill Keepers, though they will not target them on purpose, and instead deal damage by coincidentally walking through them. Forest Keepers will neither retaliate nor avoid threats.
- If an employee is to stand behind a Keeper during its death animation, they will be crushed and killed.
History[edit]
Version 45[edit]
- Forest Keepers nerfed, making it easier to hide from them.
Version 50[edit]
Forest Keepers are now killable. They have 30 HP. They are very vulnerable to fire.
